When you’re replacing your windows, the last thing (probably) on your mind is the exterior trim. And you might say, “why not?” Window trims are normally the last thing to be done in any window replacement, and when they’re done well you wouldn’t exactly notice them. That said, when it’s bad, it really looks bad, so the best you could hope for is a subtle trim.
In today’s post by Renewal by Andersen® of Greater Philadelphia, we talk about some basic ideas on how to choose the trim for your new windows.
Size of the Trim
Not all window trims are made equal—sometimes literally. The size of the trim can either be “just right” (in which case it will disappear through the wall or siding) or an eyesore, in which case your trim is too big. While there’s no hard and fast rule of how thick the trim is, a good starting point is to make your trim size proportionate to the room or the window (in that order of importance).
Renewal by Andersen has a preview option for replacement windows as you design them. You can see a sneak peek of the trim on your windows while doing so—among other things—so we suggest using it to your heart’s content.
Your Home’s Architecture
Trims should also blend well with the rest of your home’s architectural elements. You wouldn’t want a simple, sleek trim with a house that’s loud and full of sinuous lines, such as art deco. The main idea is that, because you wouldn’t choose a window that doesn’t complement its architecture, you can simply find a trim that works for that window instead of basing it on your home’s architectural style.
Color Makes It Pop
One of the biggest contributors to your choice of window trim is the color of the room (for interior trims) and the color and texture of the siding (for exterior trims). What you’re looking for is something that will stand out by complementing the color of its surroundings, and not stand out because it clashes with the wall.
At Renewal by Andersen, we offer 11 unique colors for our window trim. Some of our trim colors, like Terratone®, have the exact shade that can fit most wall colors without being too loud.
