Installing high-performance windows can make your home more energy-efficient, keeping you and your family comfortable all year round. You can also expect lower heating and cooling costs and an increase in the service life of your climate-control systems.
Renewal by Andersen® of Greater Philadelphia takes a closer look at how new windows can increase the energy efficiency of your home.

Features of Energy-Efficient Windows
- Double-Pane Glass
Modern-day windows are either double- or triple-pane, which means they insulate better than conventional windows with a single pane.
- Low-E Glass Coating
Heat-resistant and low-emissivity glass (low-e) coating blocks infrared light and helps regulate the temperature inside the home by keeping hot or cold air out.
- Insulating Frame
Vinyl and fiberglass are common energy-efficient materials for windows. Fibrex® composite material also has superior thermal insulating properties – about 700 times better than aluminum – helping optimize and maintain indoor temperature. It can weather temperature changes and will not expand or contract easily.
- Spacers
In an energy-efficient window, a spacer allows for optimal airflow between the panes.
Ratings of Energy-Efficient Windows
- Visible Transmittance
This refers to the amount of sunlight transmitted through the glazing of a window. The higher the rating of visible transmittance, the more natural light it can allow to stream through the window.
- Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC)
This refers to the amount of solar heat that can pass through the window. The lower the solar heat gain coefficient, the lower amount of heat that will flow through the room.
- U-Value
This refers to the amount of heat that can escape through the window. A low U-value is recommended for all climates.
