One of the biggest appeals of our energy-efficient replacement windows is the energy savings they generate. Another lesser-known benefit of these windows is their noise-reducing capabilities. In today’s post, Renewal by Andersen® of Greater Philadelphia shares a look at how our replacement windows help reduce noise in your home.
How Do Windows Reduce Noise?
While standard energy-efficient windows have their own inherent sound-reducing properties, ours are designed to prevent noise from getting into your home. This is due to the polyvinyl butyral (PVB) interlayer on our High Performance™ Low-E4® glass. PVB is a resin that is typically applied on automobile windshields. The difference in density between the PVB interlayer and impact-resistant window glass breaks up sound waves and dramatically reduces the sound that gets into the room.
You can choose replacement windows with the right level of sound reduction by comparing its Sound Transition Class (STC) Rating. Similar to energy performance ratings, STC ratings are presented in numeric values between 18 and 38. The higher the rating, the better the noise prevention. A standard Renewal by Andersen replacement window is typically rated at 34, which puts it ahead of most replacement windows when it comes to noise reduction.
Benefits of Noise Reduction
We are often asked if noise-reducing replacement windows are a good investment. The answer depends on how important the following are to you:
- You Want to Sleep Late — If you work on the night shift, have irregular sleeping hours or simply want to be able to sleep in during weekends, you’ll want a room where you can have peaceful, undisturbed sleep. The less noise coming through the windows, the better the quality of your sleep.
- You Work from Home — If you work from home, you need a quiet environment where you can focus on your work and hold virtual meetings without being interrupted by loud street noises.
- You’re Caring for an Infant — A quiet room can help keep your baby from getting irritated by loud noises.
- You’re a Musician or Content Creator — If you create content such as music, podcasts or similar types of video content, you can benefit from clean audio recorded in a quiet room.
